The company was founded in 2006 by a renowned group of individuals, including co-founders of Idexx, Immunex, Alnylam, Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Momenta, Vertex, Biogen and Genzyme.  The company established a state-of-the-art research and development capability to evaluate drug candidates across a number of dermatological disorders.  In 2007 Magen in-licensed from Eli Lilly & Co. a portfolio of novel, small molecule drug candidates with potential utility in a variety of dermatological disorders.

Magen BioSciences is now part of PPD, a leading global contract research organization. On 3 April 2009, PPD announced its acquisition of Magen, expanding PPD's compound partnering program into dermatology, initially in the indications of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and acne.
